Beitou2016Dec: Beitou Thermal Valley (地热谷), one of the sources to the many spas in 新北投.

The hotspring water can reach 90°C so it’s not suitable for bathing here. The public used to be able to use the water to boil eggs but now that’s disallowed for safety and water contamination concerns.

The smell of sulphur and eerie steam rising from the local rivers and ponds gave the town its name – “Kipatauw”, which means “home of witches”, is the Ketagalan (now extinct) aborigine word that has been Sinicized into the Chinese name 北投 (Beitou).
